Scotland has had an extremely eventful geological history for a country of its size and this is reflected in its vast array of geological features. Come on this course and discover some of the oldest rocks on our planet.

The course provides a thorough introduction to the geology of Scotland, provided via:

  • A series of PowerPoint presentations
  • A series of practical sessions interspersed where appropriate in the presentations, to look at a large selection of rocks, minerals, fossils, thin sections and geological maps from Scotland
  • A large selection of rocks, minerals and fossils from around the world are also available for students to handle

The PowerPoint presentations work chronologically forward in time from the Precambrian (Lewisian) through to the present day. Palaeogeographic maps and cross sections are presented for each time period, alongside relevant photos, diagrams and geological maps from across Scotland.

This is a class-based course, but a short optional trip out in the break period is offered, weather dependent, for those that want it.
