Accessibility at the Geological Society

The Geological Society aims to make all visitors to Burlington House feel welcome by providing support and creating as friendly and accessible environment as possible.

The following information will help you in planning your visit to Burlington House. If you need further assistance during your visit, our staff will be more than happy to help you.

Location

The Geological Society is located at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, W1J 0BG. Burlington House is located between Piccadilly Circus and Green Park Underground stations, with four bus stops in between.

The main entrance to the Society is on Piccadilly and is open Tuesday-Thursday 9.30am-5pm.

Mobility needs

The main entrance on Piccadilly is reached by a flight of three steps. There are then a further three steps inside by the Reception desk to access the rest of the building. Wheelchair ramps can be put out to aid access if required. This can be done before your visit by emailing reception@geolsoc.org.uk or calling +44 (0)20 7434 9944.

Accessible toilets are located on the ground and first floors.

There is a lift to access the basement and first floors.

Please note that if a visitor is unable to use stairs for safe evacuation during an emergency, they will be restricted to accessing only the ground floor at Burlington House. This is due to the lack of refuge points, evacuation chairs and evacuation lift in the building.

Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans

When the Geological Society is informed of a visitor's accessibility needs in advance, a written Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) will be prepared for the visitor. Refer to Appendix B for PEEP template. This plan will detail the following:

  • the assistance required;
  • any designated individuals responsible for providing assistance;
  • areas of Burlington House accessible to the visitor;
  • preferred evacuation routes.

When the Geological Society is informed of a visitor's accessibility needs only at the time of the visit, a dynamic PEEP will be undertaken. This plan, covering the points highlighted, will be discussed with the visitor by the staff member or team responsible for their visit.

Visually impaired and hard of hearing visitors

Guide, assistance and hearing dogs are welcome at the Geological Society.

There is a hearing assistance system fitted in our lecture theatre. The hearing system is a fixed induction loop. Look out for the T-loop symbol.

The Geological Society can arrange free parking spaces in the Burlington House courtyard for blue badge holders, subject to availability. To book, please email reception@geolsoc.org.uk or call +44 (0)20 7434 9944 at least two working days in advance of the visit.
