Geological Society Discussion Group

The Discussion Group fosters wide-ranging scientific discussion. It has its roots in the Geological Society Club, a dining club dating back to 1807. Since being established as a Specialist Group of the Society late in 2017, the Group has hosted Discussion Dinners at a number of different venues in London, including Burlington House, with a wide range of speakers and topics.

All Fellows of the Society are welcome to attend the meetings at which a speaker opens a topic of current geological interest, allowing for discussion over the meal.  There are generally six to seven meetings a year.

At its AGM, held in the spring, a committee is elected, the business of the group is covered and suggestions for the development of the future programme are debated.

There is a charge of £30 for membership (reduced to £15 for those living more than 100 miles from central London) which entitles members to discounted rates for meetings. Membership dues also allow the Group to pay for speakers and to sponsor students to attend meetings.
