Guidance on how, when and why you should renew your membership

Below we have included some frequently asked questions regarding our renewals process.  We hope you can find all of the information you are looking for here or in our more detailed FAQ's section.

A renewal letter was posted or emailed all Fellows in early October 2018 outlining your current subscription options, and balance. 

How do I pay for my membership?

Pay Online

The easiest way to pay your Fellowship fee is through our new online 'MyGSL' portal. All existing Fellows have been set up with an account using the email address that the Society has for correspondence. You can login at the top of any page.

If it is your first time signing in you can reset your password to gain access, your username will be your email address. For further instructions on how to access the portal please see our Portal guidance. 

You can also pay via phone, Direct Debit or cheque. 

Pay by phone

Call now on +44 (0)330 088 3447. The automated telephone service is available 24 hours a day.

  • Dial the number above, enter your Fellowship number and date of birth (DDMMYY) and the system will confirm your balance.
  • Simply enter your card details to complete the transaction.
  • You will be given a reference number, and you will receive a receipt by email from the Society within seven days.

Pay by cheque

Make out a cheque payable to the Geological Society and send it to:

When are Membership fees due?

Fees are due for 2019 subscriptions by 1 November 2018

In accordance with the Society's Bye-laws, we offer a generous window of eight months in which to renew your Fellowship. We strongly advise you to renew before the 31 March 2019 as non-payers will lose access to free journals and other services after this date. 

How to change products/subscriptions

A renewal letter was posted or emailed to you in early October 2018 outlining your current subscription options, and balance. 

If you would like to change your subscriptions or update your personal details please login to the MyGSL portal. Here you can update your name, address and telephone number. You can also add to or remove subscriptions from your renewal.

When do I receive my membership card?

Following a successful renewal a welcome pack and fellowship card will be sent to your registered address at the end of February  2019. 

If you haven’t received your card by the end of March 2019, please call us on 020 7434 9944.

Why should I renew?

Re-instatement of lapsed Fellowship

Membership lapsed in June 2018

If your membership lapsed due to non-payment of fees for 2018 – you can still pay for your 2018 fees and re-instate your membership by calling the Fellowship office on 020 7434 9944.

Membership lapsed before 2018

If your membership lapsed on or prior to 2017, you will need to re-apply and be re-elected. Log in to MyGSL and apply through the online form.

Support with your fees

We may be able to help if you are on a reduced income due to not working / off sick / or raising a family. Please complete the concession request form, email it back to, and we will get back to you.

Please note that if you are unemployed and would like to apply for concession, please send your request after 1 Feb 2019.

Concessionary rates are normally available to Fellows who have paid the full fee (ie the 34 - 59 bracket) for 5 years.

Membership of the Geological Society Discussion Group

The Discussion Group hosts six to seven dinners a year at a number of different venues in London, including Burlington House, with a wide range of speakers and topics.

  • £30 for annual membership (reduced to £15 for those living more than 100 miles from central London) entitles members to discounted rates for meetings.
