Earth Science Week 2019

Earth Science Week 2019
Earth Science Week 2019 in the UK and Ireland took place from Saturday 12 to Sunday 20 October 2019, with the theme 'Geoscience is for everyone'.

Earth Science Week is an annual international celebration of the geology all around us. Through public events like geowalks, hands-on activities, talks and open days, organisations and individuals aim to raise public awareness of geology and how it affects our lives.

Coordinated by the American Geoscience Institute in the US, and the Geological Society of London in the UK and Ireland, the week also takes place in an increasing number of countries around the world.

Earth Science Week 2019 photography competition

We're delighted to announce the winners of the 2019 Earth Science Week photography competition, “Geoscience is for everyone”. For the first time, we welcomed photos taken around the world. The winning photographs showcase the rich diversity of environments in which our photographers live, work, and travel.

First place goes to Ingrid Demaerschalk for 'Antarctic Reflections', with second going to Rob Storrar for 'Fresh out the box' and third to Leith Livingstone for 'Rainbow Mountain'.

All 12 winning images will be printed in a 2020 calendar and are currently available to view via our blog and in a free exhibition at the Geological Society.

Already thinking about our 2020 competition and want to know how to take a great photo? Read our interview with 2018's winner Andy Leonard to find out what he said when we asked him 'what makes a great nature photograph?'.

School visits

We’d love more geologists to take part in school workshops – let us know if you have ideas, or have a look at our education resources for some inspiration. Or why not sign up to be a Geology STEM Ambassador? Teachers can request a Geology STEM Ambassador to come to their school and give a talk or workshop throughout the year.

Topics you could request include: the uses of rocks and minerals, energy resources, how we get metals from the ground, the water cycle, mineral properties and identification...whatever you like! If you’re a school or college interested in a visit from a geologist, get in touch!

Social media

If you were involved in Earth Science Week 2019, we’d love to hear from you with pictures or details of how you took part!
