Postal Loans and Document Supply during COVID-19 closure

Resuming postal loans during Covid-19 closure

The Library is pleased to resume the postal loans service for Fellows and Corporate Patrons living in the UK. Contact us to borrow items.

The conditions of loan are unchanged from our existing terms but we have made the following adjustments to our loan system to keep our staff and membership safe, and minimise the risk of infection:

  • Staff will go into the Library on Wednesdays to deal with postal loans requests
  • The number of books that can be borrowed at the same time will depend on their size and weight, for reasons of cost and security
  • We may able to post some folded maps (though not flat map sheets)
  • Books will be handled and packed by staff wearing personal protective equipment. Parcels containing returned books will be placed in quarantine for a period of 72 hours before being re-shelved (or posted again if requested by someone else)
  • However, we request that you do not return books for the time being. Loans will continue to be renewed and we will inform you when it is safe to return items
  • Borrowers are kindly asked not to attempt to disinfect books either before or after use; this risks damage to the item, and is redundant in light of the infection control measures Library staff already have in place

Click and Collect

We are also able to provide a 'click and collect' service for those members who are able to visit central London, on Wednesdays between 11am and 3pm.  Email us your loan requests and we can arrange a time to pass you the item(s) on Piccadilly, outside the Geological Society.

Supply of pdf scans and photocopies during Covid-19 closure

Library staff are also able to scan articles and chapters from journals and books for Fellows, Friends and Corporate Patrons worldwide.

For all enquiries concerning the postal loans and scanning service, please contact the Library.
