Raw Materials Empowering Sustainability: Mind the Gap - The role of policy and governance

Outline principal mining governance approaches, and their sustainability impacts. Critically discuss roles of governments, international bodies and others. Analyse and learn from case studies of governance failure. Consider mining governance in context of wider sustainability and economic policy-making.

Learning Objectives

• Discover the principal types of governance for mining and production of raw materials, and their sustainability impacts (global frameworks e.g., OECD Due Diligence Guidelines, national regulation, voluntary mining sector standards, CRIRSCO codes, etc.), and consider the relationships between these mechanisms

• Critically discuss the role of national governments in the relationship between mining companies, local communities and other stakeholders
• Assess what part international organisations and other bodies can play
• Analyse and draw lessons from mining governance failure case studies
• Consider mining governance in the context of policy-making for wider economic and sustainability objectives, such as developing value chains at a national/regional level (e.g., for batteries), circular economy and decarbonisation
