History of Geology Group

The History of Geology Group (HOGG) was inaugurated in October 1994 to encourage interest in the lives and work of those scientists and philosophers who influenced both the study and the practice of geology.

HOGG is open to anyone with an interest in the history of geology, and the events and personalities that have shaped the way in which it is studied and practised today.

HOGG is managed and run by a committee of its members and the current Chairperson is Duncan Hawley. HOGG is affiliated to the Geological Society of London and many of its meetings are held in the Society's apartments at Burlington House in London.

Two meetings are generally held each year, together with a field weekend. Many meetings result in well-reviewed books produced as Special Publications by the Geological Society.

An ambitious forward programme of meetings is planned for the next two years.

More information is available via the History of Geology Group website.

It is not necessary to be a Fellow of the Society to join HOGG, and membership is open to anyone interested in the subject at a subscription of only £15 per calendar year (Ordinary member) or £5 for those aged 30 or under (Young member).

Applications can be made on the HOGG website, or by sending a cheque for the appropriate amount, payable to HOGG.

The cheque should be sent to the Treasurer (not to the Secretary): Dr Peter Riches (HOGG Treasurer), 3A Albemarle Road, Norwich, NR2 2DF.

Membership runs from the date of acceptance of application. All renewals are due annually on 1 January. Members joining after 1 October in any year are not required to pay a subscription for the subsequent year.

Both categories of Ordinary member and Young member receive reduced rates at all our meetings, three newsletters a year and enrolment on our discussion list where you can talk to other like-minded individuals, get help with your research or seek advice on matters relating to the history of geology.
